Junior Division Grand Prizes

1st Place: Tal Rusak, Broadalbin-Perth Middle school for a project called: “The Soils of Eastern New York State.” The prize was $300, a certificate, gold medal and an invitation to compete in the National Discovery Channel Young Scientist Competition.
2nd Place: Christine Carletta, Academy of the Holy Names for a project called “A Study of the Effects of Sedimentary Deposition of Zebra Mussels.” The prize was $200, a certificate, silver medal and an invitation to compete in the National Discovery Channel Young Scientist Competition. She also won the Eleanor Miller Reed Research Excellence Award and an Air force Award.
3rd Place: Catey Higgins, Shaker Junior High School for a project called “Can Males or Females Hear Higher Frequency Waves?” The prize was $100, a certificate, bronze medal and an invitation to compete in the National Discovery Channel Young Scientist Competition.
1st Honorable Mention: Amy Hoskinson, Richard O’rourke Middle School for a project called “How Effective is Antihelminthic Paste in Horses?” The prize was $50, a certificate, ribbon and an invitation to compete in the National Discovery Channel Young Scientist Competition. She also won the American society for Microbiology Award.
2nd Honorable Mention: Rabia Aslam, Shaker Junior High School for a project called “A Comparison of Water Quality in North Eastern Streams.” The prize was $50, a certificate, ribbon and an invitation to compete in the National Discovery Channel Young Scientist Competition. She also won the Cullen Blake Award.
3rd Honorable Mention: Samatha C. Vaughn & Natale A. Gwinn, Dole Middle School for their project called “Does the Acidity of Precipitation Differ in Relationship to the Temperature?” The prize was $25, a certificate, and ribbon. They also won the Association for Women Geoscientists Award.

1st place: Olivia Partyka, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School for her project called “An analysis of the Silver Cap Layer of the YBCO Superconductors Fabricated by Pulsed Laser Deposition and Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition.” The prize was $500, a certificate, gold medal and an invitation to attend the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair the week of May 12-18th in Louisville, Kentucky. Olivia was also a semi-finalist this year in the Intel Science & Math Search. She also received the Air Force Award and a gift of a one year subscription to Scientific American.
2nd Place: Sarah Albright, Salem High School for her project called “The Relationship Between the Media on which Drosophila melanogaster were Raised and their Food Preferences at Various Stages of Development.” The prize was $300, a certificate, silver medal and an invitation to attend the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair the week of May 12-18th in Louisville, Kentucky. She also received the Air Force Award and a gift of a one year subscription to Scientific American.
3rd Place: Lindsay Chura, Academy of the Holy Names for her project called “Agrobacterial Transformation and Transfer of the Antifreeze Protein Gene from Dendroides Canadensis to Establish Cold Tolerance in Transgenic Arabidopsis thalrana.” The prize was $200, a certificate, bronze medal and an invitation to attend the New York State Science Congress the weekend of May 11th at St. Thomas Aquinas College. She also received the Eleanor Miller Reed Science Research Award and the National Association of Biology Teachers Award. She also received a gift of a one year subscription to Scientific American.
1st Honorable Mention: Astha Bakhru, Shaker High School for her project called “A New Procedure to Test the Effectiveness of the Steroidal Ant-inflammatory Drugs.” The prize was $75, a certificate, ribbon and an invitation to attend the New York State Science Congress the weekend of May 11th at St. Thomas Aquinas College. She also received a gift of a one year subscription to Scientific American.
2nd Honorable Mention: Eric Birnbaum Sullivan, Columbia High School for his project called Difference in the Locomotoer Stimulation elicited by the Methamphetamine and Amphetamine: Possible Mediation by AMPA & NMDA glutamate receptors in the nucleus Accumbens.” The prize was $50, a certificate, ribbon and an invitation to attend the New York State Science Congress the weekend of May 11th at St. Thomas Aquinas College. He also received a gift of a one year subscription to Scientific American.
3rd Honorable Mention: Erik Turner, Bethlehem Central High School for his project called “Relationship Between wind Velocity and Formation of Out of Phase Vortices Around a Tethered Sphere.” The prize was $50, a certificate, ribbon and subscription to Scientific American. He also received the Eastman Kodak Co. Photographic Award.
The $12,000 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Scholarship upon acceptance to the University, went to Santiago Vallinas from Colonie Central High School for his project called “The Synthesis of Monomer Precursors to Develop a Piezoelectric Polymer.”
