The Greater Capital Region Science and Engineering Fair took place on March 24 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. This fair received major support from Rensselaer's School of Science and Office of VP for Research, Albany College of Pharmacy, and GE. Other sponsors are Albany Molecular, the Nuclear Society, ASM, Eastern Branch, KAPL NOVA, Clough Harbour Engineers,  MapInfo, Prentice Hall and from Rensselaer Professor Emeritus, Walter Eppenstein and the Eastern Section of STANYS.

This is both a regional Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and a regional STANYS Science Congress. There is a junior and senior division. Top participants in both the junior and senior divisions are invited to participate in the STANYS State Science Congress to be hosted by the College of St. Rose in Albany , NY , which will take place June 8-10. Arun Puttachi, from Shaker Senior High place first in the senior division making him an Intel finalist. Arun was sponsored by Nate Covert, a biology teacher at Shaker High School . The title of Arun’s project is “p21-Induced Stromal Fibroblasts on Transformed Fibroblast Line C8.” Second place and also an Intel finalist is Sarah Anderson, from Columbia High School . Her sponsoring teacher is Cindy Taylor. The title of Sarah’s project is “The P300 Speller Brain-Computer Interface (BCI): Optimizing Classification Parameters.” Both Sarah and Arun will be participating in the Intel International Science and Engineering Finals to be held in Albuquerque , NM from May 13-19. Approximately 1200 students from over 40 countries participate in this science fair. It is a very exciting place to be.

Third place in the senior division went to Abbey Kardys, from Academy of Holy Names . Abbey’s sponsoring teacher is Donna Mooney. The title of her project is “Labeled Amino-functionalized Silica Nanparticles for Optical Tracking.” Other grand prize winner is the senior division are:
  • Adam Mousa, First Honorable Mention, Columbia High School ; project title: “Discovery of Natural Anti-Platelet Combinations: Impact on Cardiovascular Diseases.”
  • Anjali Puttachi, Second Honorable Mention, Shaker High School ; project title: “Protein Kinase C-Episol: Role in Atherosclerosis.”
  • Elizabeth Allocco, Third Honorable Mention, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School ; project title: “The Neurocircuitry of Self-Recognition.

Dr. Sam Wait, associate dean of science at RPI presented the RPI $20,000 scholarship to Madhuvanthi Jayakumar from Shaker High School . Her sponsoring teacher is Nate Covert. The title of her research is “Alignment Properties of Carbon Nantube Composite.”

The Albany College of Pharmacy’s $20,000 scholarship was presented to Zachary Novakovic, a junior at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. Zachary’s sponsoring teacher is Regina Reals. The title of his research is “The Uptake of Synthetic Leptin Related Peptide (D-leu-4)OB3 in Adult Male Swiss Webster Mice: A Pharmacokinetic Study Comparing Subcutaneous and Intra-Nasal Delivery Systems.”

The top four junior division winners received invited to participate in the Discovery Young Scientist Challenge. This National competition is modeled after the Intel Science and math Search. First the top 400 finalists are identified and then the top 40 are invited to Washington , DC to compete for over $40,000 in scholarship money. Nada Gaber placed first for her project titled “the Effect of Particle Size on Angles of Light.” Her sponsoring teacher is Umima Baig from the AnNur Islamic School. Second place went to Yasin Hasekioglu for a project titled, “What Should I Wear?” Yasin is a student at the AnNur Islamic School. Third place went to Alexander Bush from Shaker Junior High. The title of his project is “Optimal Fuel Load for Maximum Flight Time of Water Bottle Rocket. His sponsoring teacher is William Salvi. Other grand prize winner in the junior division are as follows:

  • Yusuf Sarujamohaden, First Honorable Mention, AnNur Islamic School; Project title: “Hold Your Breath.”
  • Jamal Din, Second Honorable Mention, AnNur Islamic School ; Project title: “Slimy Farmers.”
  • Jacob Comini and Zachary Hatcher, Third Honorable Mention, Broadalbin-Perth Middle School; Team project title: “Storm the Castle: A Guide to Catapults.”
  • The six grand prize winners in the senior division all received a Scientific American certificate and I year subscription to the magazine.

This fair also gives out a number of special awards.
