2008 Winners

The Eighteenth Greater Capital Region Science and Engineering Fair & Science Congress took place on March 15, 2008 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Many awards are offered to the participants from professional organizations, the armed forces, scholarships to grand prize awards that allow student to move on to State, National and International competitions. If you do not have a science research program in your middle school or high school, please contact me for information on how to begin. Science research is the purist form of Standard I of the MST Standards (Inquiry Science). Major sponsors of this Fair are: RPI College of Science and RPI VP Office of Research, GE Foundation, MapInfo, Albany College of Pharmacy. Additional support comes from American Society for Microbiology, Nuclear Society, Prentice Hall, Lockheed Martin/NOVA Foundation, SI Group, Clough Harbour and Albany Molecular.

Here is a summary of the grand prize awards.

Senior Division

First Place: Anjali Puttachi, Shaker High School for her project titled: The Role of EGFR in TGF-Beta Induced PAI-1 Gene Expression. Nate Covert is her sponsoring teacher. Anjali will be participating in the Intel International Science and Engineering held in Atlanta, GA, May 11-16th where over 1200 students from 51 countries compete.

Second Place: Phoebe Cole, Academy of Holy Names for her project titled: Cancer Cells Cleave Cyclin E into Low Molecular Weight. Her sponsoring teacher is Donna Mooney. Phobe will also be attending the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Third Place: Alexandria Kuhl, Broadalbin Perth High School for her project titled: Children’s Figure Rating: A Comparative Analysis of First to Fifth Graders’ Body Image and Dissatisfaction. Her sponsoring teacher is Maura Hibbitts. Though Alexandria cannot compete at the Intel International, she will attend as a student observer. June 13-15, Alexandria will compete in the STANYS State Science Congress to be hosted at the College of St. Rose, Albany, NY.

First Honorable Mention: Matthew Hunger, Valley Central High School for his project titled: The Thrust Applied to the Horizontal and Vertical Plane during the Transition from Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) to Forward Flight in Tiltrotor Aircraft.  His sponsoring teacher is Joseph Fracalossi. He will also be competing in the STANYS State Science Congress.

Second Honorable Mention: Abbey Kardys, Academy of the Holy Names, for her project titled: Amino-Functionalized Silica Nanoparticles for Targeted Delivery. Her sponsoring teacher is Donna Mooney. She will also be participating in the STANYS State Science Congress.

Third Honorable Mention: Justine Giffen, Valley Central High School, for her project titled, The Impact of A Foreign Subspecies’ Song on Male American Singer Canaries During the Sensitive Molting Period. Her sponsoring teacher is Joseph Fracalossi.

Junior Division

First Place: Madison Wilcox, Broadalbin Perth Middle School, for his project, How Do the Properties of Different Rubber Balls Affect Their Resiliency and Elasticity? His sponsoring teacher is Anita Stabrowski, Madison received an invitation to compete in the STANYS State Science Congress and the National SSP Program.

Second Place: Alexander Bush, Shaker Junior High School for his project, Machine Learning for Robot Navigation and Object Classification. His sponsoring teacher is Deborah Jaffe. Alex Madison received an invitation to compete in the STANYS State Science Congress and the National SSP Program.

Third Place: Hannah Pickering, Broadalbin Perth Middle School, for his project, Volleyball, Football, Track, Oh My: Measuring Stress on the Patellar Tendon in Static Pose. Her sponsoring teacher is Anita Stabrowski. Hannah received an invitation to compete in the STANYS State Science Congress and the National SSP Program.

First Honorable Mention: Brianna Widerhold and Zoe Dowling, Greenwich Central Schools, for their team project, Alexander Fleming Don’t Lose Your Head! The Effects of Ampicillin on the Regenerative Ability of Brown Planaria. Their sponsoring teacher is Nicole Dixson.

Second Honorable Mention: Emily Spain and Meghan Clemente, Broadalbin Perth Middle School for  their team project, Do Males or Females Have Better Results and a Better Time When Taking the Stroop Effect Test. Their sponsoring teacher is Anita Stabrowski.

Third Honorable Mention: Bibi Jumah, An Nur Islamic School, for the project, Collapsed Again? The sponsoring teacher is Namra Saeed.
