2/19/13 - President Barack Obama has appointed Laurie Leshin, dean of the School of Science, to the advisory board of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum.
1/30/13 - IBM donated a version of its Watson system to Rensselaer, making it the first university to receive such a system. Students and faculty will explore new uses for Watson and ways to deepen its capabilities.
1/24/13 - Schwendeman's expertise lies in the general field of computational science and engineering. He is also a longtime champion of the Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop (MPI).
12/20/12 - Rensselaer has been awarded a $480,000 gift from the Emily Landecker Foundation to establish the James P. Ferris Fellowship in Astrobiology, which will support graduate students in the School of Science.

11/30/12 - A five-year $499,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation has established the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professorship in Computer Science. The initiative supports the Institute in advancing women in computer science.
